Summary: The boys from Boston return
Comment: After being out of the studio for nearly a decade, Extreme returns with a new album. The travelings of vocalist Gary Cherone and Guitarist Nuno Bettencourt have seen them embark on various solo projects, not to mention Cherones one album stint with Van Halen shortly after Extreme broke up around 1998.

The album I have is the European release, which has an extra track that features the song EXAMPLE on it, which was recorded in 1995. Fans of their old stuff will love hearing this track, as it definitely takes one back to the good old days. Regardless, for being away from a while, they still have it. The funk rock elements one may remember from there past are still relevant here, with strong songwriting and polished production. Saudades de Rock seems eclectic and versatile enough to show off bits and pieces that one may have liked from the previous four studio albums, making it a welcome come back. The semi-heavy, rollicking vibe of "Run" is great, and quasi ballads like the melodic piano tune "Peace" help mix up the track listing. Cherone's vocals are still signature, although a little more raspy than the old days.

Some songs don't grab me as much as others, but the album still has enough strength to classify as a good album by a great band that has waited far too long to get back together.

Comment: I was told to pick this one up, so i did. When i first listened to it i said to myself let me give it two more times before i decide if i like it, well the album is a very strong album , but this was mt third time listning to it, but i recomend this album for people who like extreme , and for people who like powerful , yet very funk/groove orientated.

Summary: This is Extreme for 2008
Comment: I got into Extreme in 2000 and therefore had the opportunity to experience their albums well after they disbanded. Not only that, in recent years, I've immersed myself in all of Nuno's solo bands. I was delighted when I found out that my favourite band was making a new album. I was surprised with how long, though, it took me to get into this album. Firstly, as a drummer, Paul Geary and Mike Mangini have been major influences. I happened to really like Kevin Figueiredo and enjoyed his work on the Dramagods album. He does a great job on this album but I would have really loved to have had a full Extreme album with Mike Mangini (as opposed to 3 songs on Punchline).

Anyway, I would describe this album as combination of the straight-ahead rock attitude of the first album, some of the rawness of Waiting for the Punchline and the sensibilities of Nuno's solo material. As with any Extreme album, you'll find many different types of styles.

Star = Extreme's take on classic rock
Comfortably Dumb = This song could have been on Waiting for the Punhcline (that's a really good thing!)
Learn to Love = Incredibly funky beat/riff with a great, catchy chorus.
Take Us Alive = Fun little song
Run = Funky and one of my instant favourites
Last Hour = To be honest, this is probably my least favourite song despite some great vocals by Gary
Flower Man = Punkish type feel. I absolutely love Nuno and Pat's background vocals, especially in the last chorus.
King of the Ladies = Awesome song. I love the fact that Nuno sings lead.
Ghost = Amazing pop rock song. An Extreme classic.
Slide = One of Extreme's funkiest songs. Love it.
Interface = A great re-do on this Dramagods song. Took a while but I came to really like this version.
Sunrise = One of those songs that you don't "get" right away but I've come to like it.
Peace = Another Extreme classic. One of the songs that made me feel like this was a "real" Extreme album.

Editorial Reviews:

Extreme is a US Rock band that achieved popularity in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Some of Extreme's influences, Queen and Van Halen (the latter of which Gary Cherone would eventually join and later leave), are readily apparent from their music's multi-part vocal harmonies and electric guitar tone and instrumental techniques. The band lends the listener a sound that blends the genre of glam metal with the shredding guitar work of thrash metal. Being asked about their style, Extreme categorized their music as 'Funky Metal'. Extreme has released four studio albums, two EPs (in Japan) and two compilations since its formation. The band was one of the most successful of those from the early 1990s, selling over 10 million albums worldwide. Extreme rose to fame with its 1990 release Pornograffitti, which peaked at #10 on the Billboard 200.
