Summary: A very good read.
Comment: If you like the Gears of War series of games then you will definitely enjoy this book. You will get a very good view of who the characters of delta squad really are; there's obviously more characters that you will read about but the spotlight is mainly centered on delta squad. This book holds a grim realism as compared to the games where the characters seem impervious to death.

As you progress into the book you will find out how Marcus met the Santiagos and how their lives were before they joined the cog. Every character is distinctly different and has a sad story.

All in all, a good book at about 400 pages; it's worth the $15 in my opinion.

Summary: More canon for the fans.
Comment: If you have not played Gears of War 1 or 2, then move along, this book will hold little value or interest for you. However if you played and liked the game, then this books adds some really good value for fleshing out Delta Squad members Dominic and Fenix. You still don't fully learn why Hoffman had placed Fenix in the Slab beyond a few pages of surface storyboarding. But you do get a feel of why Fenix and Dominic are so close, and why Dominic busted Fenix out of the Slab in GoW1. Good canon for fanboys.

U hope Karen continues to write more about Delta Squad, past, present and future as she really grabbed and retained the GoW world, personalities and ambiance.

Summary: one giant "meh"
Comment: The first half of the book was fairly decent and interesting but the constant jumping between time periods and peoples thoughts started to get annoying after a while. Also it takes over half of the book for the battle to acctually happen and when it finally does its not that interesting or epic.
If your a gears fan, its worth checking out to get some backstory to the storyline and characters, if not, dont bother with it.

Summary: A awesome book worth reading
Comment: This book was awesome i am a huge GoW fan and the book complements the games very nicely. it explains allot about every aspect of the games. The book flipped from 14 years after Eday and and before Eday during the Pendulum war. some other posters left some bad reviews about how it was dumb that it did flip between the two times but i have to say they are wrong and by flipping between both times(14 years after Eday and the Pendulum war) it gave you a history of how the COGS began and there purpose and by doing so it answered allot of questions and explained why the plant Sera is they way it is present day. when you read the book or play the game you see the planet Sera they are on and it has been ravaged by 90+ years of intense war.i guess without a understanding of the history of everything and not flipping back to the past one always wonders why and how things got to be and by knowing a history it adds so much more to it.at least it did for me, its allot more than just a game with cut scenes explaining a few things in between. the book explains allot about the major characters also. It would like to see the next book focus on Eday in great detail and hopefully more books will follow because this is one of the greatest stories and there is so much more they could write into more books.I just finsihed the book the other day and during reading it i could not put it down, i think i am going to read again here soon. it is well worth the time to read and a great story. i also thought the author described things with great detail for example when she described the locust getting chainsawed it made you feel as if you was watching your tv screen and chainsawing them yourself while playing your xbox !

Summary: Gears of waste
Comment: This was a huge disappointment. I wonder if the other reviewers actually read any of it. I really looked forward to a story about E-Day and how it all started. This story flopped between future time of the game story line (between GOW 1 and 2)during a military op and an operation during the Pendulum Wars before E-Day. Some of the dialogue as it was written was hard to follow who was talking. Yeah there was some character development but battle scenes of 4 gears against 30 locust lasts only two pages... Could have been told better and a better story without the back and forth flashbacks would have been better as well.

I wonder how much thought went into this project?

Editorial Reviews:

For the first time, fans of the blockbuster Gears of War video games get an in-depth look at Delta Squad’s toughest fighters–soldier’s soldier Marcus Fenix and rock-solid Dominic Santiago–as well as a detailed account of the pivotal battle of the Pendulum Wars.

As kids, the three of them were inseparable; as soldiers, they were torn apart. Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago fought alongside Dom’s elder brother Carlos at Aspho Fields in the epic battle that changed the course of the Pendulum Wars. There’s a new war to fight now, a war for mankind’s very survival. But while the last human stronghold on Sera braces itself for another onslaught from the Locust Horde, ghosts come back to haunt Marcus and Dom. For Marcus–decorated war hero, convicted traitor–the return of an old comrade threatens to dredge up an agonizing secret he’s sworn to keep.

As the beleaguered Gears of the Coalition of Ordered Governments take a last stand to save mankind from extermination, the harrowing decisions made at Aspho Fields have to be re-lived and made again. Marcus and Dom can take anything the Locust Horde throws at them–but will their friendship survive the truth about Carlos Santiago?
