Summary: Dreaming of Dex
Comment: I heart Dexter. This book is a really quick read with a dry sense of humor. He really captures the heart of a psychopathic killer. Read the book...and then watch the series.

Summary: Lacks spontaneity, action, and suspense unlike the showtime program
Comment: I cannot believe that the showtime writers created such an extraordinary show from this book. As stated in other reviews, this book continually repeats dexters conflicting inner thoughts to the point where it gets overly redundant. The writing is poorly written and it hardly describes the man that is Dexter. This is contrary to how the showtime program perceives Dexter. If you have seen the show, do not even bother with the books. The ending was the worst part of this novel. It seemed like the writer just got lazy at the end and put a few things together to get ready for his next novel. I would write more to vent about the horrible ending but then I would spoil the book for the readers who still are interested in reading it. Overall, I gave the book two stars because I thought it was a great concept with a great plot. Unfortunately, Lindsay could not put a structure to it. But fortunately the showtime writers found a way to put this great concept into a brilliant television series.

Summary: I am dreaming Dexter
Comment: I first met Dexter on the Showtime series and was thrilled to find out the story is adapated from a series of books. The first book follows the television series for the most part, with some parts added for dramatization. The book is a quick read and simple. It's perfectly filled with excitement and intrigue to keep you occupied on a lazy rainy weekend.

If you are a fan of the television series, be prepared for some changes. The book is more realistic than the show.

Summary: I WANT MORE!!!
Comment: I just can't get enough of this character. Jeff Lindsay isn't writing fast enough, I want it NOW!

Summary: Forget the book - Just watch the show.
Comment: I'm a huge fan of Dexter the TV show, so when I found out that it was an adaptation of a novel, I really didn't think I could go wrong by checking it out. Turns out that I could most definitely go wrong.

The interior monologue in the show that makes Dexter come across as sweet, despite the fact that according to all societal standards he's a monster, just doesn't come through on the page. Instead, it's more a battle for the reader to keep going as the words keep piling up and the same messages about Dexter's "hunger" seem to repeat over and over again.

Now, please believe me when I tell you that it is RARE for me to ever advocate a video representation of any kind over a book. 99.9% of the time I believe that a book will be better than a movie or show. Unfortunately, Darking Dreaming Dexter represents the other .1% - The story should have gone straight to script.

Honestly, the only reason I even gave this 2 stars is because of Showtime's success in transforming it into a very entertaining and provocative series. So, as I said in my title (and may never say again in my life), forget the book and tune in on Sunday nights at 9!

Editorial Reviews:

The Basis for a New Showtime® Original Series Starring Michael C. Hall

Meet Dexter Morgan, a polite wolf in sheep’s clothing. He’s handsome and charming, but something in his past has made him abide by a different set of rules. He’s a serial killer whose one golden rule makes him immensely likeable: he only kills bad people. And his job as a blood splatter expert for the Miami police department puts him in the perfect position to identify his victims. But when a series of brutal murders bearing a striking similarity to his own style start turning up, Dexter is caught between being flattered and being frightened–of himself or some other fiend.
